Dog Foods Comparable to Victor Reviewed
Victor has several lines of dog foods depending on specific dietary needs. Victor dry food formulas mainly cover active dogs’ needs and help with complete nutrition and weight management.
Most of Victor dog foods are formulated for all life stages.
The formulas include impressive amounts of protein and remarkable whole grains.
Still, for a super-premium dog food brand that is Victor, some pet parents expect a more varied assortment of animal protein and better animal ingredients.
One example is the controversial blood meal as the animal protein source, often found in Victor dog food recipes.
Let’s look at the alternatives to some of their popular dog foods.
Taste Of The Wild Ancient Stream With Ancient Grains Dry Dog Food
Taste of the Wild makes premium dog food with a great nutritional profile and macronutrients. The recipe is an excellent alternative to the Victor Select Ocean Fish formula. In fact, it might even be better.
The first three ingredients are all animal protein sources: salmon, salmon meal, and ocean fish meal.
The crude protein content in the Taste of the Wild formula is 30%, compared to Victor’s 24%. That’s much more high-quality animal protein than Victor’s recipe.
Like Victor, Taste of the Wild includes a fantastic selection of ancient and whole grains. They are rich in dietary fiber, B-vitamins, and will provide great, steady energy to your canine throughout the day.
Taste of the Wild offers more value for money with multiple proteins, rich Omega-3 fatty acids, and premium, high-quality ingredients.
A proprietary mix of probiotics and prebiotics supports healthy digestion, immune system, and overall wellbeing.
Orijen Original Grain-Free Dry Dog Food
Orijen crafted this formula for complete nutrition, yet it seems like a great alternative to Victor Purpose Nutra Pro high-protein recipe. The Orijen formula contains the exact same high amount of proteins, but they come from better animal sources.
What’s the main difference? Orijen’s first 12 ingredients are animal sources — whole meats, organ meats, fish, eggs, and by-products.
On the other hand, Victor’s first two ingredients are animal proteins, with many grains and fat afterward.
If you want a truly good high-protein diet for your furry friend, Orijen is a better choice. While it does use named by-products, these are secondary protein sources — unlike the blood meal in Victor’s case.
The formula contains a whopping 85% of animal proteins. The animal sources are blended to provide all the necessary parts — whole meats, organ meats, cartilage, and bone.
These translate into added minerals, hip and joint support, and a better immune system for your active canine.
The Orijen formula is grain-free, with a carefully selected mix of legumes, fruits, and veggies.
Victor’s dog food is grain-inclusive, with a wonderful selection of ancient and whole grains. But the Orijen formula uses whole, high-quality legumes, with animal sources being more prevalent.
Sportmix CanineX Chicken Meal & Vegetable Formula Dry Dog Food
Sportmix makes dog food primarily for active dogs, so it’s pretty comparable to Victor dog food.
The CanineX formula is an excellent alternative to the Victor Realtree MAX-5 PRO recipe.
It contains a higher amount of proteins — and a novel krill meal, for a boost of energy, healthy fats, and animal proteins.
While Victor offers fantastic grains, Sportmix CanineX is grain-free. And quite budget-friendly for the unique premium ingredients it includes.
In addition to the high protein, you can count on your dog getting some of the highest-quality Omega-3 fatty acids. These acids are crucial for heart health, sustained energy, strong muscles, and brain development.
The formula contains no wheat, soy, corn, or any by-products.
The recipe includes blueberries, carrots, apples, and cranberries that most dogs adore.
Wellness Complete Health Senior Deboned Chicken & Barley Dry Dog Food
Wellness is an innovative brand that crafts specialized dog food formulas and limited ingredient diets. Their recipes offer premium ingredients, with no corn, soy, or wheat.
We think that Wellness Complete Health Senior is an amazing alternative to the Victor Senior Healthy Weight recipe.
The Wellness recipe includes a mere 10% of crude fat content. As such, it helps your dog shed pounds faster while providing complete and balanced nutrition at the same time.
The protein content is right where it should be — not too low, not too high. Senior dogs still need protein, but too much can put extra strain on their kidneys. With protein at 22%, your canine should be comfortable, while maintaining muscle mass.
Fat-loss efforts are greatly aided by high-quality dietary fiber. Wellness delivers in this department, too. Oatmeal, ground barley, and ground brown rice are healthy whole grains, easy to digest, with loads of healthy fiber.
The overall senior health is further supported by probiotics, Omega-3 fatty acids, antioxidants, and taurine. These ensure cardiovascular health, strong immunity, and an efficient digestive system.
The Wellness formula is definitely something to be excited about — it’s filled with premium ingredients that will support your dog’s wellbeing (and slim waist) for a long time.
Diamond Naturals Chicken & Rice Formula All Life Stages Dry Dog Food
Diamond Naturals offers great value for money as it’s filled with high-quality grains that support dogs’ everyday energy needs.
The formula is comparable to Victor Classic Professional formula. It provides complete and balanced nutrition, with high-protein content and healthy Omega-3s.
We especially like that Diamond Naturals include many fruits and veggies in their recipe. Think blueberries, oranges, spinach, and carrots — but also mango and papaya. Dogs love these and will enjoy the taste.
The Diamond Naturals recipe is fortified with additional probiotics and prebiotics to help with the digestive system.
This way, your dog can efficiently absorb and use all the nutritional goodness from this formula.
The formula also contains DHA for brain development and antioxidants for a stronger, healthier immune system.
American Journey Beef & Sweet Potato Recipe Grain-Free Dry Dog Food
American Journey gives pet parents premium, natural ingredients at an affordable price.
Its Beef & Sweet Potato Recipe is comparable to the Victor Purpose Hero. The protein content is just slightly lower, yet more than enough for any active dog.
The main difference?
American Journey doesn’t use meat meal as the main protein source — instead, they opt for a whole beef.
The first three ingredients — whole beef, chicken meal, and turkey meal — are rich animal sources of amino acids and minerals. This means that your active dog gets a highly valuable, nutritional kibble, and all the strength they need for physical activities.
Like Victor, American Journey also includes natural sources of chondroitin and glucosamine sulfate, to support active dogs’ joints later in life. Chondroitin and glucosamine are the building blocks of cartilage and slow down the regular wear-and-tear of dogs’ joints as they age.
Natural fiber and probiotics in this recipe will aid in digestion. The formula is also packed with Omega-3s for healthy vision, skin, and coat.
Like most of American Journey products, this dog food is free of artificial flavors, colors, or preservatives.
Blue Buffalo Wilderness Wolf Creek Stew Hearty Beef Canned Dog Food
Blue Buffalo is a well-known brand, and their latest line, Wilderness, is getting a lot of love. We think that Wilderness Wolf Creek Beef Stew is comparable to Victor Beef & Vegetables Stew. Actually, it’s probably better in some regards.
What do we mean by this? Blue Buffalo puts whole beef as the first ingredient. On the other hand, Victor’s canned food may be titled Beef and Vegetables Stew, but it actually starts with chicken as the first ingredient.
The meat in Blue Buffalo is complemented with beef broth, organ meat, and whole chicken. This is an excellent and tasty mix of high-quality animal protein. Tender chunks of meat come together in a hearty gravy which most dogs simply adore.
Both formulas are grain-free and include peas and pea derivatives.
Unfortunately, Blue Buffalo wet food doesn’t contain Omega-3s as Victor does. As such, it may be more suitable as a topper rather than complete dog food.
But still — the fact that their beef recipe starts with beef, and not chicken, makes it truer to its name than Victor’s beef formula.
How to Transition to a New Food
Every time you choose a new dog food for your canine, the transition should be gradual. Dogs’ tummies don’t react well to the new food, and they might experience stomach upset.
To start, change 25% of the dog’s old food with new food. Wait for at least two days before raising the ratio to 50%.
After two or three days, you can increase the quantity to 75%, and after that, 100%. By then, your dog should be used to the new food.
What should you do if your dog experiences digestive issues? Lower the amount of new food you’re feeding. Wait a few days, then try again.
Victor dog food has had a long tradition of producing super-premium recipes for our furry friends. They are a respectable company with many great products, which pet parents love and trust.
Hopefully, you found your new favorite dog food similar to the Victor formulas.
