  • Guaranteed Analysis: 28% Crude Protein, 15% Crude Fat, 4% Crude Fiber, 11% Moisture
  • Caloric Content: 408 kcal/cup
  • Key Feature: Non-GMO dry dog food with taurine that’s formulated for small dogs

The most important part about feeding a smaller breed is making sure they get enough nutrients in their smaller portions of food. So it’s essential to choose one that includes premium proteins and beneficial fats.

Wellness Small Breed Complete dry food is what you’re looking for in a well balanced option.

First, the recipe starts with real deboned turkey, as well as salmon and chicken meal. These lean meats offer 28% protein. They also supplement taurine for a healthy heart.

Chicken fat and salmon oil offer omega fatty acids for healthy skin and glucosamine for joint support. Since both Malteses and Poodles have bad joints, this is especially important for your Maltipoo. And, oatmeal provides natural prebiotic fiber for gut health.

But there are more nourishing ingredients as well.

Spinach, blueberries, and carrots include vitamins like iron for energy. And, these additions add in a boost of antioxidants for mental wellness and a healthy immune system.

It’s developed without any GMOs, meat by-products, fillers, or artificial preservatives. All ingredients added to this high quality dog food are sustainably sourced and made in the US.

Best for Puppies

Nutro Natural Choice Puppy Dry Dog Food

Nutro Natural Choice Puppy Chicken
  • First 5 Ingredients: Chicken, Chicken Meal, Whole Grain Barley, Brewers Rice, Whole Grain Brown Rice
  • Guaranteed Analysis: 28% Crude Protein, 16% Crude Fat, 3% Crude Fiber, 10% Moisture
  • Caloric Content: 390 kcal/cup
  • Key Feature: Non-GMO puppy dry dog food with DHA to support brain development

Small breed puppies need more food and calories to support their ability to play all day. They also need a balanced diet with calcium and fatty acids to support healthy growth. This is why it’s so important to choose a formula created for puppies.

Nutro Natural Choice Puppy dog food starts with high-quality protein sources. These include chicken, chicken meal, and potato protein. These ingredients help maintain lean muscles and strengthen your pup’s bones.

Both chicken fat and fish oil offer omega-3 fatty acids. They offer support for flexible joints, as well as DHA for brain and eye development. Plus, added calcium helps support strong bones and joints.

Whole grain barley and whole grain brown rice offer easy to digest carbohydrates, and provide natural fiber for a happy tummy. Dried pumpkin and kale supply calcium, potassium, and manganese for healthy bones and a boost in energy.

This formula is made with non-GMO ingredients. There’s also no chicken by-product meal, corn, wheat, or soy.

Best for Seniors

Blue Buffalo Life Protection Formula Small Breed Senior Dry Dog Food

Blue Buffalo Life Protection Formula Small Breed Senior Chicken
  • First 5 Ingredients: Deboned Chicken, Chicken Meal, Brown Rice, Barley, Oatmeal
  • Guaranteed Analysis: 23% Crude Protein, 13% Crude Fat, 6% Crude Fiber, 10% Moisture
  • Caloric Content: 370 kcal/cup
  • Key Feature: Bite-sized dry dog food that’s high in glucosamine for senior Maltipoo

Extra support becomes crucial as your dog ages. Maltipoos can still live another 7–10 years after they reach seniorhood, so they may need more moisture in their food — as chewing can be difficult.

Why not offer a holistic dog food that’s focused on providing older dogs the best of everything?

Blue Buffalo Life Protection Senior formula meets the specific needs of small breed seniors.

Glucosamine and chondroitin help with joint health and mobility, even for aging pups. And deboned chicken and chicken meal offer high quality protein. This helps with healthy muscle maintenance and extra energy.

Flaxseed and chicken fat provide omega fatty acids for healthy joints. And they also encourage coat health.

Blue Buffalo also adds “LifeSource Bits” — a proprietary blend of nutrients and antioxidant-rich ingredients that provide a healthy immune system.

The kibble is also smaller for tiny jaws, and is shaped to promote tartar removal. This is excellent for dogs that are prone to dental issues, like Maltipoos. It doesn’t include any corn, wheat, soy, or poultry by-product meals.

Did you know that dogs can have avocados in small portions? Avocados offer plenty of fatty acids and B vitamins for extra energy.

Because of this, AvoDerm Advanced Joint Health dog food includes avocados in their food to keep your Maltipoo healthy and active.

Chicken meal, pea flour, and garbanzo beans are added for protein. These help build lean muscles and keep high active dogs energized all day.

Along with avocados, chicken fat and flaxseed provide omega-6 and omega-3 fatty acids. These nourish the joints and keep them supple and flexible for dogs who like to run around all day.

Taurine and probiotics are supplemented for healthy heart function and easy digestion.

This formula also contains chondroitin and glucosamine. These give your dog’s joints some extra support and help prevent mobility issues.

Just like their Poodle and Maltese ancestors, Maltipoos can be prone to gut issues. While they may not need to worry about a food allergy, they may need digestive support.

To support a healthy and happy tummy, it’s important to choose a formula that’s easy on digestion.

Hill’s Science Diet Sensitive Stomach dog food provides a balanced diet for optimal digestive health. It starts with real chicken, an animal protein that includes antioxidants and omega fatty acids for skin and gut health

The recipe also combines complex carbohydrates that are easier for your dog to digest. These include brewers rice, yellow peas, cracked pearl barley, and dried beet pulp for prebiotic fiber.

This fiber makes it easier for your dog to absorb the nutrients in their food without stomach pains.

Pet parents want the best for their dog. Sometimes, the best looks like minimally processed and human-grade dog food.

Ollie Customized Dog Food makes this easier for you. No more measuring, cooking, and portioning out your own dog food.

And, you can ensure that your pup is getting the nutrients they need. Ollie works with dog nutritionists to provide food that meets their standards.

To get started with Ollie, you’ll start with a 5-minute quiz about your Maltipoo. You’ll answer questions about their body type, height, potential allergies, and likes.

Ollie then calculates the perfect diet for your pup with human grade food. They let you choose between four recipe options — beef, lamb, chicken, and turkey. After you choose the dog food you think your pup will like, Ollie ships the food completely fresh to your door.

And, they deliver fresh every two weeks.

Each shipment comes with a feeding guide, storage container, and scoop. This makes measuring and feeding so much easier — and your dog can still enjoy a home-cooked meal.

Superior nutrition doesn’t have to break the bank. In fact, there are many high value dog foods that are also budget-conscious. My personal favorite is Diamond Naturals Small Breed Adult dog food.

This formula focuses on offering energy, proteins, and fats for a great deal without compromising on the quality of the ingredients.

The recipe starts with chicken, chicken meal, and whole eggs for a protein rich food. This helps build and maintain lean muscles, as well as boost heart and brain function. Plus, whole eggs offer iron, B vitamins, and vitamin D for energy and bone health.

Then, they include flaxseed, coconut, and chicken fat for coat health. These also keep your Maltipoo energetic and reduce inflammation.

Kale, blueberries, and pumpkin provide essential and natural antioxidants for immune support. These ingredients are also chock full of vitamins like vitamin A for eye health and calcium for healthy bones.

The formula is made in the US by a family-owned company. It’s made without corn, wheat, artificial flavors, or colors.

Keep in mind that this recipe does include chicken, which may cause food allergies for some Maltipoos. If you think your dog is allergic, switch to an allergen-free food.

Best for Weight Loss

Purina Pro Plan Adult Weight Management Shredded Blend Dry Dog Food

Purina Pro Plan Adult Weight Management Shredded Blend Chicken
  • First 5 Ingredients: Chicken, Rice, Whole Grain Corn, Poultry By-Product Meal, Corn Germ Meal
  • Guaranteed Analysis: 27% Crude Protein, 9% Crude Fat, 5.5% Crude Fiber, 12% Moisture
  • Caloric Content: 330 kcal/cup
  • Key Feature: Low calorie and high protein dry dog food to support weight loss

Your dog’s happiness is important, but so is their health. Unfortunately for Maltipoos, they are prone to obesity, which can affect their small joints. So it’s vital to make sure that your pup is at a healthy weight.

Purina Pro Plan Weight Management dog food makes this super easy to do. The formula starts with real chicken as the first ingredient, delivering healthy protein and fats for muscle and joint support.

Beef fat and fish meal offer flavor, but they also provide omega fatty acids and glucosamine to protect the joints from stress.

Wheat bran provides a natural prebiotic fiber. This offers beneficial bacteria in your dog’s intestinal tract, supporting healthy digestion. Probiotics also help boost their metabolism.

To keep the dog food from being bland and risking your dog not liking it, Purina created a unique kibble.

It’s crunchy on the outside, with tender, meaty shreds on the inside. This also encourages your pup to chew their food, which is beneficial during weight loss.

Best for Dental Health

Merrick Lil’ Plates Grain-Free with Freeze-Dried Raw Bites Dry Dog Food

Merrick Lil' Plates Grain-Free Chicken & Sweet Potato
  • First 5 Ingredients: Deboned Chicken, Chicken Meal, Turkey Meal, Sweet Potatoes, Potatoes

  • Key Feature: Dry dog food high in calcium and potassium for dental care

Maltipoos need a bit of extra support when it comes to their teeth. Just like other small dogs, they are prone to dental issues like tooth decay and gum disease. While regular brushing can help, why not offer food that also helps polish and protect the teeth?

Merrick Lil’ Plates Grain-Free Small Breed offers a raw-like diet in dry food form.

It features real deboned chicken as the very first ingredient. Then freeze-dried raw chicken bites provide enhanced nutrition and extra flavor.

Flaxseed and salmon oil help to increase calcium and potassium absorption. This helps your pup get the needed benefits of these vitamins that build strong bones and healthy teeth.

The kibble is hard enough to scrape plaque and tartar off of teeth as your dog chews. But the added benefit of raw chicken also provides vitamins to build strong teeth.

This dog food formula also supplements both prebiotics and probiotics to aid in digestion. It’s grain free and gluten-free and cooked right in Hereford, TX.

How to Choose the Best Dog Food for Maltipoo

Maltipoos need smaller kibble, moderate protein, and healthy fats to keep up with their daily activities. Here’s how to choose the best food for your dog.

Moderate Protein

Most Maltipoos do well on a moderate-protein diet. As a puppy, they’ll need the recommended amount of 22%. In adulthood, they’ll only need about 20%.

If you have a more active pup, 23% to 25% should suffice.

Luckily for Maltipoos, they thrive on many different proteins, including meats and meat meals, as well as soy and protein from peas and legumes. However, animal protein like deboned chicken or beef is ideal as a first or top 5 ingredient.

Moderate Fat

Due to possible joint issues, fats should be in your Maltipoo’s diet. These not only support joints, but also keep your dog’s coat shiny and gives them extra energy.

Fish or salmon oil, eggs, flaxseed oil, and animal fat (like beef or chicken) are great sources of hearty fats. They will also include glucosamine and chondroitin for joints.

Complex Carbohydrates

Most dogs do well with carbohydrates. Complex carbs like oats, rice, and sweet potatoes help provide healthy fiber and prebiotics. Plus, they offer extra energy and help keep your pup full.

Fiber

While fiber is important for digestion, it’s especially beneficial for dogs that have sensitive tummies. If your Maltipoo has a hard time digesting their food or has constipation, there are ways to supplement their fiber content.

All commercial dog foods have fiber, but your dog may need a bit more and that’s okay. You can add some wet food to their kibble. And, formulas with pumpkin, flaxseed, and oats are helpful.

Vitamins and Minerals

Dog food formulas already supplement vitamins and minerals, so there’s no need for your dog to take a multivitamin or anything extra.

But, based on your Maltpoo’s health, you may want to offer a few more nutrients. Glucosamine, chondroitin, and omega fatty acids are all good options to supplement for small dogs like your pup with joint issues.

Ingredients to Avoid

Some commercial dog food manufacturers use additives to your dog’s kibble to lower their costs and make it last longer.

But in worst case scenarios, these fillers can cause long-term health problems like kidney disease, heart issues, and even death.

Avoiding any artificial colors, flavors, and artificial preservatives is the most helpful. Dyes, synthesized flavors, and both BHT and BHA can be toxic to dogs.

But other fillers like wheat, corn, and soy can cause flare-ups for dogs that have allergies. So these are important to avoid as well.

Maltipoo Feeding Guide

Maltipoos are like their Poodle parents. They can be tiny at an average of 5 pounds when fully grown or a small-medium size at 20 pounds.

However, unlike their ancestors, they can gain weight easily. Here’s how to feed your Maltipoo.

Puppies

Maltipoo puppies grow fast. In fact, they reach maturity at around 10 to 12 months old. Because of their accelerated growth, they’ll need a higher-calorie diet.

Your youngster will need around 350 to 550 calories a day, depending on its weight. On average, a Maltipoo puppy will need about 50 calories per pound that they weigh. These calories should be split between three meals to encourage consistent growth.

And, your dog’s food should be formulated for puppies. This will provide the nutrients that they need to grow strong and healthy.

Adults

Once full-grown, your Maltipoo will weigh anywhere between 6 and 20 pounds on average. The easiest way to calculate how many calories to feed them would be to multiply their weight in pounds by 35.

As an example, a 10 pound Maltipoo will need about 350 calories a day to sustain its lifestyle.

This will also depend on how active your Maltipoo is, if you’re feeding wet or dry dog food, and the food itself. You may need to adjust the calories to find the perfect amount for your furry friend.

No matter what, you should feed your adult dog no less than twice a day. This helps regulate digestion and avoid gas buildup.

Seniors

Just like with most seniors, Maltipoos slow down as they get older. Because of this, lowering your dog’s daily calories is essential. Aim for about 30 calories per pound of weight.

This means a 10 pound Maltipoo will eat about 300 calories a day.

Of course, avoid free feeding and stick to two meals a day.

Dry or Wet Dog Food?

The answer to this question will depend on the individual needs of your pup. But typically, Maltipoos do well with both wet and dry food, as well as a mixture of both.

Dry dog food is usually more budget-friendly and can also clean teeth naturally. Wet is safer when serving more raw meats. But, it can also cause runny poops, which no one wants.

If your Maltipoo is picky, the best course to take is a bit of kibble mixed with a spoonful or two of wet. That way, they can get the benefits of both.

Common Maltipoo Health Issues

Since Maltipoos are a mix between Maltese and Poodles, they’re considered strong and don’t typically have any major health concerns. But, there are a few minor health problems to keep in mind.

Obesity

Like Maltese, Maltipoos can gain weight if they aren’t active or eating within their calorie limit.

Yet, obesity is preventable and avoidable if they have the proper nutrition. Be sure to measure their food correctly and feed them the recommended two times a day.

Also, remember to keep them active, taking daily walks or doing another exercise for at least 30 minutes a day.

Sensitive Stomachs

Did you know that dogs have naturally stretchy stomachs? But, even with fairly easy going tummies, some dogs can be affected by the foods they eat.

There is no known cause for a sensitive stomach, and the condition can pop up at any time. But, worms, bacterial infections, enteropathies, and even food allergies can affect how your dog feels. Symptoms include vomiting, diarrhea, and even itchy skin after eating.

With a sensitive stomach, it’s important to avoid dog foods with too many ingredients. Examples include those with food allergies like wheat, soy, and corn. And, wet dog food can be helpful as well, coating the stomach and offering good bacteria to the gut.

Dental Issues

Like other small breeds, Maltipoos are prone to dental decay. This usually happens due to lack of care, so it’s especially important to brush your dog’s teeth daily (if possible). If not taken care of, tartar builds up on the teeth, causing tooth decay, infections, and more.

Along with regular brushing, dry dog food can help clean your pup’s teeth. When the kibble is gnawed on, it scrapes the teeth and naturally brushes them. Plus, many commercial foods include vitamin D and calcium, helping to fortify strong teeth.

Joint Issues

Joint issues like luxating patellas (when the knees displace) are common amongst older Maltipoos. While these issues aren’t completely avoidable, there are a few tips that can help.

For one, early detection is key. If you notice your dog limping or seemingly in pain, get them checked out by your veterinarian.

Another important component is a diet high in omega fatty acids, glucosamine, and antioxidants. These additives help lubricate and protect the joints, allowing them to thrive even with age. And of course, regular exercise is essential as well.

Eye Diseases

Vision loss and blindness can be common amongst senior Maltipoos. While this isn’t completely avoidable, it’s possible to help your pup keep its eyesight for as long as possible.

For example, glaucoma can be treated if caught early enough. So regular visits to the vet can keep your dog’s vision safe. If not caught early enough, glaucoma can also be extremely painful, so early detection is key.

Alongside yearly checkups, be sure to feed wholesome dog food to your friend. Foods high in antioxidants, vitamin A, vitamin C, and even fatty acids can be beneficial to their eye health.

Our Verdict

Maltipoos are adorable and easy to maintain small breed dogs. But they still need essential vitamins and minerals to keep their bodies healthy and happy.

Wellness Small Breed Complete Health is the best food.

First, it provides a well balanced formula, and second, it offers extra benefits — like antioxidants — for immune support.

The other brands on this list can also offer the support your Maltipoo needs to live their best life. No choice is a wrong choice from this list!
