Purina is a huge dog food company with many different brands. The Beyond line is one of their higher-quality options.

It is made with higher-quality ingredients than other Purina lines, and it is often higher in protein.

While this brand is newer on the market, it has quickly gained popularity due to its great value. It features quite a few premium ingredients while remaining far less expensive than much of the competition.

Keep reading for our complete Purina Beyond dog food review. We’ll help you figure out if this pet food is a suitable option for your canine.

Purina Beyond Introduction

purina beyond products

Nestle Purina has been around since 2001, but both of its parent companies were around for a long time before they merged. In fact, Purina is one of the oldest and largest pet companies in the world.

This company is currently based in St. Louis, and all of its brands are crafted in the United States.

The Purina Beyond product line is newer, and was designed to be a more premium option compared to their other dog foods. For this reason, it is often more expensive — though the ingredients in it are also higher quality

Plus, many of the formulas are grain-free, making them suitable for dogs with food sensitivities.

When it comes to this brand, you’re getting what you pay for.

What Kind of Dog Food Does Purina Beyond Offer?

Because it is newer, this food line is smaller than some of Purina’s other dog foods.

Many of the Beyond foods are quite similar. They are focused on high-quality, natural ingredients.

There are a few wet food recipes available, as well as many dry food options.

Choosing the best food for your dog has never been easier with this ever-expanding line of options.

Simply

Beyond Simply contains as few ingredients as possible. It is perfect for dogs with food allergies who have to avoid common dog food ingredients.

They have many different recipes available, including one with lamb and one with salmon. Some of their formulas are made with more common animal proteins, such as chicken and beef.

This particular line only offers dry food. However, the foods they do offer are quite varied. There are many different veggie and animal combinations, so you should be able to find something for just about any canine.

Our Recommended Product: Purina Beyond Simply White Meat Chicken & Egg Recipe Grain-Free Dry Dog Food

With very few ingredients, this food is both high in protein and suitable for dogs with food allergies.

Superfood Blend

The name of this product line pretty much says it all. As well as focusing on natural ingredients, these recipes include a variety of superfoods — with ingredients like real egg, pumpkin, and oatmeal.

Many of these ingredients are backed up by evidence, though some are not. For instance, pumpkin has been shown to help dogs lose weight. [1]

Currently, this line only has one available food. It features salmon as the main protein, which allows it to include tons of omega fatty acids.

Our Recommended Product: Purina Beyond Superfood Blend Wild-Caught Salmon, Egg & Pumpkin Recipe Dry Dog Food

This Purina brand dog food is fortified with omega fatty acids and various superfoods, like pumpkin.

Organic

Beyond also features a whole line of completely organic products. Naturally, they are advertised and named as such.

There are several dry and wet formulas available in this line. However, all of these recipes are made primarily with chicken. This is likely because chicken is the easiest organic animal protein to find. However, if your dog is sensitive to chicken, this may be a problem.

There is no corn, wheat, soy, or poultry by-product meal in any of these recipes, and they are generally made with better ingredients than most. This brand is usually considered Beyond’s most natural dry dog food option.

Our Recommended Product: Purina Beyond Organic Chicken, Egg & Carrot Recipe Small Breed Dry Dog Food

Purina Beyond Wet Food Varieties

On top of its many kibble options, this brand also creates many different wet dog foods. These are not necessarily grouped into any specific categories.

Some specific lines do have wet food options — for instance, the Organic line has a few wet recipes — but many do not fall into any particular place at all. They are simply labeled as “Beyond.”

Like the whole Beyond brand, the wet foods focus largely on natural ingredients and simple recipes. They are free from many of the fillers you may find in other options.

Our Recommended Product: Purina Beyond Beef, Potato & Green Bean Recipe Ground Entrée Grain-Free Canned Dog Food

Like most Beyond recipes, this formula includes only a few ingredients and is quite high in protein.

  • Added nutrients for complete balanced nutrition

Purina Beyond Ingredient Analysis

Many of the Purina Beyond recipes are fairly simple and do not include many ingredients. Often, they only contain a few sources of animal protein followed by a few veggies.

As a grain-free food, this brand seems to focus largely on the use of veggies — but this doesn’t necessarily mean that it includes more animal meat than other brands.

All formulas we looked at contain whole meat as the first ingredient, with the exact kind used varying from recipe to recipe. Fresh chicken and beef are rather common, but they also have rarer options, like lamb and salmon.

Some of these less common options are perfect for dogs with food allergies, as they are less likely to cause a reaction. [2]

Chicken meal and similar meat meals are also included high on most ingredient lists. This is, simply, concentrated animal meat — for example, chicken meal is whole meat, but with much of the moisture removed. Therefore, it is higher in protein than whole meat per ounce.

Pea starch and similar derivatives are used throughout the formulas. Starch is gluten-free and used mostly as a binding product for kibble. Pea starch does provide some energy and caloric content but very little nutritional value.

Canola meal is regularly used throughout Beyond recipes. It is a by-product of canola manufacturing and is very common in feed for farm animals.

Canola meal is somewhat controversial. It does have a high protein content — which means that it will boost the food’s overall protein content — but it’s  plant-based and not as high-quality as some other options.

Many of these formulas include some form of added fat, like beef fat. This is derived through rendering, which is similar to scooping the fat off the top of a soup. It is biologically appropriate for dogs and improves the taste of the food.

One of the major controversial ingredients this brand sometimes utilizes is pea protein. This derivative is a concentrated form of the protein found in peas. It raises the overall protein content of the food but does so with a lower quality, plant-based source.

Furthermore, peas are being investigated for a potential link to certain heart diseases in dogs. While nothing absolute has been discovered yet, this is a potentially worrisome development. [3]

Dried yeast is also added to some of their recipes. This could potentially be a controversial ingredient, though we didn’t find much scientific evidence that yeast is bad for dogs.

In fact, yeast is quite nutritious. It does include a bit of protein, but it is usually added so low in the ingredient list that it won’t matter very much. Typically, it is added as a nutritional supplement in many dog food recipes, as it is quite high in various vitamins and minerals.

Purina Beyond Reviews

Most of this brand’s dog food reviews are quite positive. Many owners reported that their dogs liked the taste, and that they liked the high-quality, grain-free recipes. Plus, many owners found it inexpensive when compared to other grain-free foods.

Like many of the Purina recipes, this grain-free brand seems to be a great option for picky eaters. Many have raved that their dogs loved the recipe — even those that were older and didn’t seem to eat much at all.

One positive reviewer stated this about Purina Beyond Simply White Meat Chicken & Whole Barley Recipe Dry Dog Food:

“Not knowing my new dog well. I was recommended to get an easily digestible food, and this fit the bill! She gobbles it right down, and there have been no issues. I like that there are simple ingredients too!”

Many of this dog food brand’s recipes are dry foods, so that’s naturally what our reviews focused on. However, their wet dog food also received praise.

Owners had similar things to say — it’s great for picky eaters, inexpensive, and the ingredients are quite good. Most people enjoyed the fact that it was a grain-free option at a much lower cost than other dog food brands.

One reviewer said this about Purina Beyond Beef, Potato & Green Bean Recipe Ground Entrée Grain-Free Canned Dog Food:

“My Dachshund, Sugar, has a sensitive tummy. She is almost 18 years old, and we needed to find a food that she would like and that would be easy for her to digest. So far, Purina Beyond has worked well. It smells good, unlike some foods we have tried, and both my babies like it, which is a plus!”

Other reviewers also agreed that it didn’t smell bad at all, so if you’re sensitive to the smell of other wet foods, then we recommend trying this one.

Purina Beyond Recalls

Purina Beyond has never been recalled. However, it is rather new, so this is to be expected. It simply hasn’t been around long enough to be recalled.

Of course, the larger Purina brand has had a few recalls. But when you consider the massive amount of dog foods they make, they have had very few compared to other pet food companies.

Overall, Beyond is a recall-free line that appears to be very safe. Purina is excellent about their recalls, so we expect the same for this dog food.

To stay updated on recalls, we recommend visiting the FDA website.

Our Verdict

Purina Beyond is a grain-free dog food that features a variety of high-quality ingredients. Recipes tend to be very meat-heavy, featuring ingredients like chicken meal and whole meat. In some cases, even rarer meats like ranch-raised lamb are used.

Compared to other premium options on the market, this grain-free line is quite inexpensive — you get a lot of bang for your buck.

Dogs love the flavor as well, according to many of the dog food reviews. And many pet owners were pleased with the ingredients and cost of the food.

The Simply line’s grain-free recipe is perfect for dogs with food sensitivities. All of the options seem great for dogs with picky eating habits.

Overall, we can absolutely recommend this food for most dogs out there. It is high-quality, especially for the price, and is completely suitable for most canines.
